Asteroid Apophis Heading Towards Earth: Set to Pass Close in April 2029, Known as the ‘God of Chaos’
Asteroid Apophis: Heading Towards Earth in 2029
ISRO has confirmed that a massive 335-meter asteroid, named Apophis, is advancing towards Earth. This asteroid, first discovered in 2004, is set to pass near Earth on April 13, 2029, at a minimum distance of just 32,000 kilometers.
NASA Dismisses Collision Risks
While concerns initially arose about a potential collision, NASA has since ruled out the possibility. When Apophis approaches Earth, NASA’s OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft will study the asteroid, providing valuable data.
The “God of Chaos” Asteroid
Apophis has been dubbed the “God of Chaos,” named after an Egyptian deity. Its ominous size and proximity to Earth initially sparked fears of catastrophic impacts, but updated research has alleviated these concerns.
From Discovery to Tracking
Apophis was discovered in 2004 by the Kitt Peak National Observatory. In its early stages, scientists believed it posed a serious threat, with a potential impact in 2029. However, continuous tracking by Goldstone Deep Space Communications and the Green Bank Telescope revealed a clearer trajectory, significantly reducing its risk.
S-Type Asteroid: Composition and Structure
Classified as an S-type asteroid, Apophis consists primarily of silicate materials combined with nickel and iron. Its unique peanut-like shape has drawn interest from the scientific community, who are eager to learn more about its composition.
ISRO’s Planetary Defense and Continuous Monitoring
ISRO has taken a proactive approach to protecting Earth from potential space threats, including asteroids like Apophis. Through its newly developed Planetary Defense initiative, ISRO’s NETRA system is continuously monitoring Apophis. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has reassured the public that India will cooperate with global partners to address any possible external dangers.
