Jewelry Theft at Historic Kantharpura Mahakali Temple in Gandhinagar
A shocking incident of jewelry theft occurred at the historic Kantharpura Mahakali Temple, located beneath the ancient Kabirwad tree in Kantharpura village, Dahegama taluka, Gandhinagar district. The temple, known for its heritage status and revered by thousands of devotees, became the target of thieves early on the morning of Tuesday, March 18.
The Incident
The Mahakali temple, a significant place of worship with a deep connection to the local community, was broken into by burglars in the early hours of the morning. The thieves stole valuable ornaments, including the gold eyes of the deity and an umbrella (chhatra) used for worship. When the priest arrived during the morning aarti, he noticed the theft after finding the idol’s eyes and umbrella missing. A search was conducted around the temple premises, but no clues were found, leading to the conclusion that a robbery had taken place.
CCTV Footage Captures the Incident
Surveillance cameras near the temple captured the entire incident. The footage reveals two thieves arriving in an eco-friendly vehicle before entering the temple, committing the theft, and escaping. A formal complaint has been filed with the local police, who are now investigating the case and trying to track down the culprits.
Heritage Site with Security Concerns
It is important to note that the Kantharpura Mahakali Temple is listed as a heritage site. However, despite its significance, the authorities have not implemented adequate security measures at the location. This incident follows a similar theft that occurred at the temple just two months ago, raising concerns about the safety and protection of such historical and religious landmarks.
