Gautam Gambhir Becomes Head Coach of Team India
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced on Tuesday that Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of Team India. The 42-year-old Gambhir has taken over from Rahul Dravid, who was known as “The Wall.”
Dravid’s tenure ended after the T20 World Cup, and Gambhir’s tenure will continue until July 2027.
A month and a half ago, Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in IPL 2024. This year, he became the mentor of the Kolkata franchise. Not only that, but under his mentorship, Gambhir took Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs in two consecutive seasons.
BCCI Tested Gautam Gambhir for Head Coach Position
Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of IPL 2024 champions Kolkata Knight Riders, interviewed for the head coach position of Team India. According to an ESPN report, Gambhir met with the members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
This committee included former cricketers Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik. The last date for submitting applications for the coach position was May 27th. BCCI had been searching for a coach for the Indian team for a long time, as the tenure of the current head coach Rahul Dravid ended after the T20 World Cup.
Recently in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir Responded to a Child’s Question
At a recent private event in Abu Dhabi, while answering a child’s question, Gautam Gambhir said that becoming the head coach of Team India is a matter of honor. He expressed his desire to coach the Indian team, stating that there is no greater honor than coaching your national team.
He said, “When you represent the Indian team, you are in the eyes of over 1.4 billion Indians worldwide. What could be a greater moment for anyone than helping India win the World Cup? It is those 1.4 billion Indians who will help India win the World Cup. Everyone prays for us, and we start playing with all our efforts.”
