Rest of India Team for Irani Cup 2024: Ruturaj Gaikwad as Captain, Ishan Kishan Included; Prithvi Shaw to Open for Mumbai
The Rest of India team has been announced for the Irani Cup 2024, with Ruturaj Gaikwad appointed as the captain of the 15-member squad on Tuesday. Abhimanyu Easwaran will serve as the vice-captain, and Ishan Kishan has also been included in the team. Ishan scored a century in the Duleep Trophy.
Ruturaj Gaikwad was the captain of India C in the Duleep Trophy. The team is currently in second place on the points table, with 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 draw from 3 matches. He has scored 232 runs in those 3 matches. The Rest of India will face the 2023 Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in the Irani Cup 2024. This match will be held from October 1 to 5 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal Also Included in the Team
Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have also been given a chance in the Rest of India team. Both players are also part of the Test team for the Bangladesh series. If these players do not get an opportunity in the playing XI for the Test match, they will be released for the Irani Cup.
Ajinkya Rahane to Captain Mumbai
Mumbai has entrusted experienced player Ajinkya Rahane with the captaincy for the Irani Cup. Up until 2015-16, Mumbai had won 41 Ranji Trophy titles. However, the team has not been able to secure the trophy in the last six tournaments. They reached the finals in 2016 and 2021 but lost to Saurashtra and Madhya Pradesh, respectively.
Last year, Ajinkya Rahane was dropped from the Indian team. Following this, Mumbai appointed him as the captain of their Ranji team. The team performed remarkably well and won the Ranji Trophy for the 42nd time by defeating Vidarbha in the finals. This title win came after a six-year gap for the team.
Rest of India: Defending Champion
The Rest of India is the defending champion of the Irani Cup. The team defeated Saurashtra, the winner of the Ranji Trophy 2022-23, by 175 runs. This match was played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot (now known as Niranjan Shah Stadium).
