ICC Announces the Hosting Schedule for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas and the West Indies

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalized the dates for the much-anticipated 2024 T20 World Cup, which is set to take place from the 4th to 30th of June. This historic event will span across 10 cities in the Americas and the West Indies, featuring a total of 55 matches played over 27 days among 20 competing teams. Notably, this will be the first time in the 147-year history of cricket that the ICC is organizing a global event in the Americas.

The ICC has shortlisted 4 cities in the United States, with only one city being granted international status at present. The remaining locations will be evaluated in the coming months to determine the final selection. As of now, the shortlisted cities are Florida, Morisville, Dallas, and New York. Among them, the Leaders Hill Stadium in Florida has already obtained international status. Additionally, two T20 matches between India and the West Indies are scheduled to be played in August at this venue. The remaining three cities are yet to achieve international status, as per the ICC guidelines, and the host status is contingent on obtaining the necessary approval.

In order to host the World Cup, acquiring international status is essential as per the ICC guidelines. The host cities need to fulfill specific criteria set by the ICC, including obtaining the International Status, to successfully organize the tournament. The International Status is a crucial prerequisite to host any ICC event.

As the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 nears, cricket enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly looking forward to witnessing top-class cricketing action in this uncharted territory. With the participation of 20 formidable teams, the tournament promises to be a riveting display of skill, passion, and sportsmanship, further fostering the global growth of cricket.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will not only provide a platform for the teams to showcase their talent on the world stage but also serve as an opportunity to strengthen cricket’s presence and popularity in the Americas and the West Indies. As the event draws near, cricket fans across the globe eagerly await the commencement of this historic tournament, which is sure to create lasting memories and inspire a new generation of cricket enthusiasts in the host regions.

Currently, Morrisville (Church Street Park) and Dallas (Grand Pier Stadium) host major league 20-20 matches, while New York (Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx) hosts any level of franchise or international games. This tournament mostly includes warm-up matches in various American cities, while West Indies will have fewer warm-up matches and more main matches.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will have 20 teams divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each. The group stage will consist of 40 matches. The top 2 teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 stage, where 12 matches will be played. The top 2 teams from the Super 8 stage will qualify for the semifinals. The final match will be held on June 30, 2024, between the winners of the semifinals. The tournament will span 27 days, featuring a total of 55 matches, including 2 semifinals, 1 final, and 52 group stage matches.

The previous two T20 World Cups held in 2021 and 2022 had 16 teams each. The Super 12 stage included 8 teams that qualified from the qualifiers. In both tournaments, a total of 45 matches were played. In contrast, the upcoming 2024 tournament will be the first time that 20 teams participate, making it the largest T20 World Cup to date, with more than 50 matches scheduled. India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, while England emerged as the champions in 2022.

There are two significant reasons behind organizing the T20 World Cup in the United States:

Firstly, cricket’s popularity is rapidly spreading in North America, and the ICC aims to strengthen its foothold in the region by hosting a major event here.

Secondly, ICC has requested inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Hosting the T20 World Cup in the US would further support the bid for cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics, as ICC has made appeals to the Olympic committee, awaiting a decision by the end of this year.

Conclusion:

As the countdown to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 begins, cricket aficionados worldwide are eagerly awaiting the commencement of this historic tournament. With 55 action-packed matches spread across 10 captivating cities in the Americas and the West Indies, the event promises to be a feast of cricketing excellence and a celebration of the sport’s universal appeal. Cricket fans can look forward to witnessing unforgettable moments as the world’s finest T20 teams compete to etch their names in cricketing history.
