Mohammed Shami’s Successful Surgery: Recovery Progressing, Confirmed Absence from IPL

Indian cricket team’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami underwent a successful surgery in London on Monday. Shami shared this information by posting a photo on his social media account. Shami had represented Team India in the ODI World Cup last year but couldn’t continue playing cricket thereafter due to injuries.

Shami suffered an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup in October-November last year.

He expressed his optimism about returning to the field soon, despite acknowledging that the recovery process might take some time. Shami’s social media post read, “My surgery in London was successful. Recovery will take time but I am excited to be back on my feet and bowling soon.”

Since the World Cup, Shami was rehabbing at the National Cricket Academy.

Recovery Could Take 8 Months

Following his surgery, Mohammed Shami might require approximately 3 to 4 months of rest. After this period, he will begin practicing again. Upon receiving fitness clearance from the NCA (National Cricket Academy), he will be granted permission to participate in matches. This process could take anywhere from 6 to 8 months.

According to reports from PTI, Shami may not be able to participate in the IPL or the T20 World Cup after his surgery. It may be challenging for him to stay fit for the upcoming series against Bangladesh and New Zealand scheduled for September-October. However, BCCI hopes that Shami will recover in time for the Test series against Australia, set to begin in December.

Shami’s London Visit and Treatment

Mohammed Shami had been in London for the last three weeks. In the final week of January, he underwent a special injection for his foot injury. Doctors advised him that he could start running after three weeks. If he had felt better, he could have commenced bowling after running. However, as the injection didn’t have the desired effect, Shami had no option but to undergo surgery.

Shami won the Purple Cap while playing for Gujarat in IPL-2023.

His IPL career has been truly remarkable, having played 110 matches so far. Shami maintains an average of 26.87 and an economy rate of 8.44, with a total of 127 wickets. He has also taken four wickets in an inning on two occasions, highlighting his consistency and prowess as a bowler.

South Africa and England Test Series Not Held

Following the completion of the World Cup last year in November, Mohammed Shami was excluded from the Test series. Towards the end of the previous year, he was part of the Indian team’s tour to South Africa. However, due to personal reasons, he had to withdraw before the start of the two-test match series in Edin. Subsequently, he couldn’t participate in the home Test series against England either.

Shami Took Most Wickets in World Cup

Mohammed Shami had an outstanding performance during the ICC World Cup held in October and November of the past year. During the tournament’s 7 matches, he took the most wickets, tallying up to an impressive 24 wickets. Additionally, he became the first Indian bowler to take more than 50 wickets in World Cup matches.
