Florida Family Sues NASA for $80,000 Over Space Debris Damage

A family in the state of Florida has filed a lawsuit against NASA for $80,000 (approximately 6.685 million Indian Rupees). The case stems from an incident on March 8, 2021, when a 700-gram piece of space debris fell from space and damaged the roof of their house.

NASA’s Response

NASA explained that the debris was part of a used battery cargo pallet that was discarded as waste from the International Space Station in 2021. The American space agency stated that although the debris entered the atmosphere, it did not completely disintegrate.

Legal Action

According to The Guardian, the law firm Craneville Sumner is representing the family. The firm stated that their client, Alejandro Otero, owns the house in Naples, Florida. The impact of the debris created a hole in the roof.

When the debris fell, Otero’s son, Daniel, was present at home. Fortunately, he was not injured in the incident, but the situation could have been much worse. The family is seeking compensation from NASA for the damages incurred.

Craneville highlighted that space debris is continually increasing, leading to more accidents. NASA’s response to this matter could set a precedent for the future. Space debris, also known as “orbital debris,” consists of artificial objects that are no longer useful but still orbit around the Earth. This debris is created from objects sent into space by humans, including pieces of rockets, satellite fragments, and objects discarded by astronauts.

Over the past 60 years, as space activities by countries around the world have increased, so has the amount of debris in space. According to NASA’s website, there are currently over 29,000 objects larger than 10 cm orbiting the Earth.

NASA estimates that at least one piece of debris reaches Earth every day. These pieces either fall somewhere on Earth or burn up upon entering the atmosphere. Most of the space debris falls into the water, as 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water.

In 1979, NASA’s space station Skylab fell to Earth, but it also landed in the ocean. This incident was widely discussed because the debris weighed 75 tons, which could have caused massive destruction if it had landed on any populated area. Skylab was launched into space by the United States on May 14, 1973.

Skylab functioned properly for about five years. However, a solar storm in space burned its panels, and eventually, its engines stopped working. It then started descending towards Earth. Initially, it was uncertain where it would land.

In April 2018, it was anticipated that the Chinese space station Tiangong would crash into Earth. There was considerable concern about this, but it ended up falling into the ocean.
