iPhone 15 Display Production and Periscope Camera Lens Yield Below Expectations, As Per Reports

Recent reports indicate that Apple’s iPhone 15 display panels have entered mass production, signaling the upcoming launch of the highly anticipated smartphone lineup. Notably, Samsung, a prominent supplier to Apple, has been entrusted with the manufacturing of the OLED displays for the new iPhones. This development underscores the close partnership between the two tech giants and reflects Apple’s reliance on Samsung’s expertise in display technology.

Apple’s 2023 iPhone lineup is expected to consist of four models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. As mass production commences, consumers can expect a range of choices to cater to various preferences and needs.

According to a recent supply chain report in The Elec (in Korean), Samsung Display has initiated mass production of panels for Apple’s highly anticipated smartphones. This development comes after Apple granted Samsung permission to manufacture four distinct OLED panels, which will be utilized for the purported iPhone 15 series.

One notable feature rumored to be present in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus is the Dynamic Island. This is a novel feature that sets these models apart from their predecessors. Although specific details about the Dynamic Island have not been disclosed in the report, it is anticipated to introduce exciting advancements to enhance user experience and performance.

According to recent reports, Apple has given conditional approval to LG to manufacture displays for the iPhone 15 series. However, before LG can initiate mass production, it is required to make certain improvements to meet Apple’s stringent quality standards. This conditional approval reflects Apple’s commitment to ensuring that its suppliers deliver products of the highest quality.

On the other hand, BOE, which is another supplier for Apple, has not received approval to manufacture displays for the iPhone 15 lineup. The delay in granting approval to BOE is reportedly linked to an ongoing lawsuit against the company filed by Samsung over alleged patent violations. As a result, BOE’s involvement in the production of iPhone 15 displays is not expected until the following year.

Previous reports have indeed suggested the possibility of a periscope camera being featured on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is anticipated to be Apple’s flagship model within the iPhone 15 series. However, the latest supply chain information indicates that the production yields for the essential zoom components, provided by LG Innotek, and the image sensors, supplied by Sony, are below Apple’s expectations.

The periscope camera technology offers advanced optical zoom capabilities, which could significantly enhance photography performance on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This feature is expected to provide nearly twice the optical zoom performance compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In a recent Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg shared some exciting details about the upcoming iPhone 15 series. According to his report, the iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to receive several significant upgrades.

Firstly, the iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to be equipped with a faster 3nm chip, which promises improved performance and energy efficiency compared to previous iterations. This advancement in chip technology is likely to enhance the overall speed and responsiveness of the devices, offering a seamless user experience.

Additionally, Gurman mentioned the introduction of an “Action” button to replace the traditional mute switch on the iPhone 15 Pro models. This new button might bring added functionality and convenience to users while redefining the device’s hardware design.

Furthermore, the iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to feature reworked internals that facilitate easier repairability. This enhancement could be significant for users who prioritize device maintenance and could potentially reduce repair costs and environmental impacts through increased device longevity.

To improve durability, Apple is reportedly planning to replace the stainless steel edges with titanium edges on the iPhone 15 Pro models. Titanium is renowned for its strength and lightweight properties, making it an ideal choice for enhancing the device’s robustness while maintaining a sleek design.
