Niraj Chopra Qualifies for Paris Olympics with 88.77m Javelin Throw at World Athletics Championship: Advances to Tournament Final

Indian star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra made a remarkable throw of 88.77 meters in the qualifying round of World Athletics Championship 2023 on Friday. With this, he has also qualified for the Paris Olympics. Neeraj has secured his spot in the final of the World Athletics Championship as well. The Paris Olympics will commence from July 26, 2024.

In the ongoing World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, Neeraj achieved an 88.77 meters throw in his first attempt of the qualifying round, which is also his season’s best. Apart from winning gold medals in the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, the 25-year-old Neeraj Chopra is also a Diamond League champion.

Having won a silver at the World Athletics Championship, Neeraj Chopra has not only qualified for the finals but also raised India’s hopes for a medal in this championship. No Indian athlete has clinched gold at the World Athletics Championship so far. However, Neeraj Chopra secured a silver medal in the previous year’s World Athletics Championship 2022 held in Oregon. This victory ended India’s 19-year-long wait for a medal.

Current World Champion Anderson Peters is also participating.

In addition to Neeraj in the championship, current World Champion Anderson Peters, London 2012 Olympic Champion Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago, Germany’s World No. 2 Julian Weber, and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem are also partaking.

Only two medals to India’s name in the championship.

The World Athletics Championship commenced in 1983. Indian athletes have secured just two medals in the World Athletics Championship so far. Anju Bobby George became the first Indian to win a medal in the World Championship by clinching a bronze in the women’s long jump at Paris 2003.
