Mega Demolition Drive in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar: Over 450 Illegal Structures Razed in 2 Hours
On the morning of May 29, 2025, a large-scale demolition drive was carried out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in the Akbarnagar locality of Bapunagar, located near Ajit Mill crossroads behind the S.P. office. The operation targeted over 400 makeshift and permanent illegal structures, which were demolished within just two hours using five JCBs and more than eight Hitachi machines.
Post-Demolition Clean-up and Preventive Measures
Following the demolition, AMC has initiated the removal of all debris from the site. To ensure that illegal encroachments do not reoccur, the corporation plans to build a boundary wall around the cleared area.
Previously, AMC had issued eviction notices to all residents of the area. In 2014, 221 families were allotted alternative housing in Vatva, though 76 individuals continued to live in Akbarnagar. Today’s demolition was executed by the AMC’s North Zone Estate Department under tight police security. After the rubble is cleared, the boundary wall construction will commence to safeguard the area.
Police Maintained Law and Order During Operation
ACP R.D. Oza of H Division confirmed that tight police arrangements were in place during the demolition. The deployment included:
- 2 ACPs
- 9 PIs
- 27 PSIs
- 400 police personnel
- 10 SRP sections
ACP Oza stated that the entire operation was carried out peacefully without any violence.
15,000 Square Meters Freed for Development: Deputy Municipal Commissioner
Vishal Khanama, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of AMC’s North Zone, shared that the demolition was conducted with the help of 14 large machines, including 5 JCBs, 2 Hitachi breakers, and 7 Hitachi machines, along with 100 laborers.
A total of 15,000 square meters of land has now been cleared. Notices regarding illegal constructions had been issued well in advance. AMC is now considering developing public amenities like a library garden and a ward office in this area. Additionally, a wall will be built to prevent any future encroachments.
Criminal Elements Once Resided in the Demolished Area
It’s important to note that Fazal and Aftab, two individuals who had earlier threatened police with swords, were residents of this locality. Around five months ago, a group of miscreants had created chaos on public roads in Rakhial and Bapunagar areas, even going as far as threatening police officers with weapons. The video of the incident had gone viral, resulting in the suspension of two police officers who failed to act appropriately.
