4 Dead, 300 Cops Injured in Haldwani Violence After Illegal Madrasa Demolition In Uttarakhand

The Municipal Corporation of Haldwani, Uttarakhand, demolished a newly constructed Madrasa in the city on Thursday, February 8, using a bulldozer. The structure, intended for offering prayers, was razed by the bulldozer, sparking outrage among the locals who subsequently attacked the municipal team.

Devastation and Chaos: Storm Ravages Banbhulpura Police Station

Banbhulpura Police Station was surrounded on all sides by the storm and suffered extensive stone pelting. Several vehicles were set on fire, and even transformers were damaged, causing a power outage in the area. Four fatalities and injuries to 100 police personnel were reported. The District Magistrate imposed a curfew in Vanbhulpura, with orders to shoot on sight during storms.

Enhanced Security Measures Deployed Amid Tensions

In light of security concerns, four companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and two companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that encroachments have been removed as per court orders. Efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators of the violence and take strict action against them.

Demolition of Madrasa Incites Violence and Retaliation

In addition to the bulldozing of the Madrasa, widespread vandalism occurred. Acid attacks, assaults on police personnel, and injuries to journalists were reported. The police resorted to firing tear gas shells and using firearms to disperse the rioters.

Official Response and Closure of Educational Institutions

Commissioner Pankaj Upadhyay stated that the demolition of Madrasa and the prayer site was unauthorized. The Municipal Corporation sealed both sites after reclaiming three acres of land. The demolition took place on Thursday amidst efforts by the police to identify the instigators of the violence.

High-level Meeting Amidst Unrest

Chief Minister Dhami held a meeting with Chief Secretary, DGP, senior police, and intelligence officials to review the situation. An appeal for maintaining peace was issued to the public, alongside directives to take stringent action against those inciting violence.

School Closure Announcement

Harindra Kumar Mishra, Block Education Officer of Haldwani, announced the closure of all schools in the area on February 9.
