In India, the empowerment of women is experiencing a significant surge, with governmental efforts actively contributing to this momentum. According to economic data from the fiscal year 2022-23, the participation of women in the country’s workforce has reached 37%, marking a notable increase. 

Out of approximately 69.2% of the female population in the country, 37% are now engaged in active employment or are employed. This trend signifies a promising shift towards greater gender inclusivity in the workforce, reflecting both societal progress and the effectiveness of policies aimed at women’s empowerment. 

As more women join the workforce, the nation stands to benefit from their diverse talents and perspectives, ultimately fostering economic growth and social development.

Talent Solutions Provider CareerNet’s Report Highlights Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai as Hotspots for Women Employment

According to CareerNet’s report titled ‘State of Women Employment in India,’ Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai have emerged as prominent hubs for female employment opportunities. In the year 2023, there has been a notable increase of 2-5% in the participation of women in the workforce compared to the previous year. 

Particularly, there has been a significant rise in hiring for roles in junior professional positions and executive boards. This trend indicates a positive shift towards gender diversity and inclusivity in India’s job market, with these cities leading the charge in providing career opportunities for women across various sectors.

Women’s Employment Trends in India: Insights from 2023 Report

According to the report, in the year 2023, 40% of individuals who secured placements from colleges were women. Women candidates with 0-3 years and 3-7 years of experience collectively constituted 20-25% of the workforce. Notably, significant growth in female employment has been observed in major cities across India, particularly in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). 

Hyderabad leads in female recruitment, accounting for 34% of hires, closely followed by Pune (33%) and Chennai (29%). However, there has been a 20% decrease in hiring in Delhi-NCR, contrasting with the 2% decrease noted in the 2022 statistics. These trends underscore evolving dynamics in women’s employment and highlight the varying landscapes across different urban centers in India.

Disparities in Urban White-Collar Professionals: Insights from CareerNet CEO

According to Anshuman Das, the CEO and co-founder of CareerNet, approximately 30% of the urban population are engaged in white-collar professions, whereas only 5% of those in rural areas fall into this category. 

This disparity highlights significant gender inequality within India’s white-collar segment. While the participation of women in the Indian workforce is increasing, there remains a pressing need to address the barriers that hinder their re-entry into the workforce or sustained career growth.
