Jharkhand Gang-Rape: Spanish Woman Brutalized, 3 Arrested, 4 Absconding

In the Dumka district of Jharkhand, the police have arrested 3 suspects in a case of collective sexual assault against a Spanish woman, while the search for 4 other suspects continues. The arrested suspects were presented in the Dumka court on Sunday for remand. They were then remanded to jail.

On Friday night, seven individuals from the village of Hansasdiha in the district allegedly committed a collective sexual assault against a tourist visiting from Spain. The case was registered on Saturday, following which the police apprehended the first three suspects and subsequently made arrests. The three apprehended suspects are said to be residents of the village of Kunji.

The foreign woman has stated in her complaint that initially two individuals came, and then she called five others. They all assaulted her. Subsequently, all of them tied her husband’s hands and for almost two and a half hours, they committed crimes one after another.

The National Commission for Women has taken note of the incident. On Sunday evening, Commission member Mamta Kumari met with the affected Spanish couple at the scene of the incident. Subsequently, Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar Singh has been requested to take action through a written letter.

First, two individuals arrived, then the woman called five more. In the complaint given to the police, the woman stated that both she and her husband were in a tent around 7 in the evening when they heard voices from outside. They saw two people talking on the phone. Shortly after, five people arrived on two bikes and entered all the tents. In the meantime, three individuals caught my husband, tied his hands, and beat him.

When four people pulled me out of the tent, they all beat me as well. Then one after another, they committed various atrocities. Later, three more people who were present in the tents also engaged in the violence. The incident occurred between 7:30 and 10 in the evening. All the accused were under the influence of alcohol.

A theft involving diamonds and dollars has been reported in the FIR.

The complainant stated that after the robbery, the accused took away her husband’s smartwatch, diamond ring, purse, Bluetooth device, Spanish bank credit card, Bangladeshi currency, 11,000 Indian rupees, and 300 US dollars. In her statement to the police, the woman has provided a detailed account of the incident in the complaint filed with three pages.

Speedy trial will be conducted – SP

The Superintendent of Police of Dumka, Pitambar Singh Kherwar, has stated that in this case, a speedy trial will be ensured, and the guilty will be given strict punishment. The accused who are currently in jail include Rajan Marandi, Pradeep Kisku, and Sukhlal Hemram. These three belong to different areas of Kunji village. They work as laborers and are aged between 25 and 30 years.

Women’s Commission raises questions on police conduct

The members of the Jharkhand Women’s Commission have raised questions about the weak law enforcement and criminal justice system. They have criticized the police for giving a 24-hour ultimatum to apprehend all the accused. The National Women’s Commission has also written a letter to the Deputy Inspector General regarding this matter. Additionally, the Chairperson of the Commission, Rekha Sharma, has tweeted, providing information to the DIG about this issue.

Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) has also taken note of this matter and directed to provide legal assistance to the affected woman and her husband. Executive Chairman of JHALSA and Justice S.N. Prasad is keeping an eye on the safety of the foreign couple. Under legal provisions, the victim will be entitled to compensation of up to Rs. 10 lakhs, proper treatment, and all legal facilities.
