In 2019, Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi. Rahul had entered the electoral arena from Amethi in 2004 and had a smooth run during the first ten years of the UPA government. However, in the last decade, he faced significant challenges. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he lost to Smriti Irani by more than one lakh votes. But in 2019, Smriti successfully broke Congress’ stronghold and won by 55,000 votes. Apart from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi also contested from Kerala’s Wayanad and won there.
