Tragedy in Navsari: Five Drown in Purna River, Two Dead Including Pregnant Woman and Her Brother-in-law

Navsari, Gujarat – A heartbreaking incident occurred near Dharagiri village in Navsari district, where five people — four women and one man — drowned in the Purna River. Among them, three women were rescued, while a pregnant woman and a young man lost their lives.

According to reports, the deceased woman has been identified as 22-year-old Aarti Shailesh Shekhaliya, who was three months pregnant. The young man who also drowned was her 25-year-old brother-in-law, Kalpesh Hasmukh Shekhaliya, who had been married for just one year.

How the Incident Happened

The tragic event unfolded when four women went to the riverbank near Dharagiri village to wash clothes. During the process, one of the women accidentally slipped into the river. As she struggled, the other women rushed to help her, but they too were pulled in by the current.

Brave Rescue Attempt Ends in Tragedy

Seeing the women drowning, a local young man — Kalpesh — jumped into the water in an attempt to save them, including his pregnant sister-in-law. Unfortunately, he too got caught in the strong river current and went missing.

A massive search operation was launched involving the fire brigade and local fishermen. After hours of effort, the body of the young man was recovered from the river.

Timely Action by Fishermen Saves Lives

Fishermen passing by quickly acted and threw their nets into the river, managing to rescue three women. However, one woman’s body was retrieved later and sent to Navsari Civil Hospital.

Victims Identified as Family Members

It has been confirmed that the deceased pregnant woman and the young man were sister-in-law and brother-in-law. The incident has left the local community in shock and mourning, as what began as a routine chore turned into a devastating tragedy.
